An Tale of Unexpected Kindness: When a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground

During 2006, I traveled to Canberra for a medical school interview. My plan was I would book a place to stay upon arrival, however upon reaching the city, a large conference was taking place and all the youth hostels and cheap hotels had no vacancies.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could bed down in the airport – but soon learned the local airport, not like the one back home, is not open all night. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I caught a bus into town and began walking towards the casino, believing I might spend those hours in a place that stayed open 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape to succeed at an interview the following day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more individuals with such compassion.

It seems I seemed out of place since a woman spotted me wandering around downtown and inquired whether I needed help. I recounted my situation and immediately she offered I could crash on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – which was perfect, as that’s where the important interview was the following day. She even offered a meal: a leftover filled rolls she had taken home her part-time job. This gave me the bathroom and a protected spot to rest to sleep.

In retrospect, I now understand what a big chance she accepted as a young woman letting a man she’d just met stay in her room. At that time I existed within a bubble of male privilege and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I am astonished she took that chance – but still very grateful.

I never did attending that university, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her amazing act of generosity. My sincere desire is that karma has returned her generosity abundantly. We could all use more folks who show such kindness.
