Battlefield 6's Relaxed Playlist Ignites Intense Debates Over Bots, XP Rewards, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, the game developers introduced a new playlist titled Relaxed Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode mirrors the regular Breakthrough format but features several notable adjustments:
- Every squad has just 8 real players, with the rest filled by 32 bots.
- Actions done by human gamers award full XP, while AI activities offer lower rewards.
- Just a pair of locations are available: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Player tags, accolades, and career stat updates are disabled.
In short, the playlist lives up to its title: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume there's nothing wrong, as it provides more options for gamers looking for different methods to enjoy the title. However, if video games has shown one thing, it's that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, many BF6 fans are mad.
Player Reactions: Anger to Praise
"People want human opponents. Don't repeat the errors of your competitors," reads a response to the mode reveal. "Absolutely shocking idea," says a different user. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user notes, "I have no idea where we are headed with this title," and someone else lists all the issues they consider to be problematic in the game: "Fix bugs, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."
However, for every complaint, there are players sharing how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this title all the time. Let them strike a balance," adds a different comment. One reply via social media clarifies that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is great for me," and another applauds the mode for "avoiding intense competition."
Constructive Criticisms and Player Feedback
All that said, there are constructive reasons to criticize the new mode. Some users have highlighted that it could increase wait times even longer for different playlists because of the sheer number of options in the game already. Similarly, some areas already encounter AI-filled matches in the current modes. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode does not begin without a required amount of real players, even though it primarily centers on combat against bots.
Lastly, one of the biggest grievances is that a previous feature was promised to offer complete rewards, even against bots, but that was removed when they tried to eliminate XP farming from the mode. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base compromising halfway, as per a Reddit comment. A different user labels this mode as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I had great enjoyment in the first couple of days, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Occur?
Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything so far with Battlefield 6, it is that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Assignments being too difficult got fixed very quickly, just like the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics shows this new playlist isn't performing to their expectations, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
