Britain Set to Use Frozen Russia's Funds to Fund the Ukrainian War Effort

The UK is ready to advance with employing the full worth of immobilized Russia's holdings to bolster Ukraine's defense operations, Leader Sir Keir Starmer has announced.

In a joint statement, the officials of the United Kingdom, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany emphasized that this coordinated action would escalate tension on Russian President Vladimir Putin and persuade Moscow to come to the table.

They added that the move would be implemented in close cooperation with the America.

United Kingdom penalties have immobilized in excess of £25bn of Russian funds since the Russian government initiated its full-scale invasion against Ukraine in 2022. However, previously, resources provided to Ukraine using Russian holdings had only been drawn from gains and dividends accrued on them.

Sir Keir assured Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky that the UK, France, and Germany were in agreement in their desire to push forward toward employing the complete amount of the immobilized Russian sovereign assets to halt hostilities.

He noted that further sanctions in the coming days and weeks would increase the strain on Moscow.

This declaration comes after European Union representatives gathered in Copenhagen previously to discuss using frozen Russia's holdings for a €140 billion credit to the Ukrainian nation.

Last month, American leader Donald Trump encouraged international partners to seize or utilize immobilized Russia's assets, based on reports.

The worth of seized Russia's funds in the European Union is estimated to be almost €211bn.

Russia carried out widespread aerial attacks throughout the Ukrainian territory on recently, leading to blackouts in significant regions of Kyiv, Kyiv, and eight other regions.

In a message on X after the incident, Zelensky wrote that the cynical and calculated attack aimed at civilian and energy infrastructure.

"What is required is not empty words but firm measures - from the US, EU, and the Group of Seven - in providing air defence systems and enforcing penalties," he emphasized.

"Each restrictive measure undermines Russia's war machine," Zelensky wrote, in a different message.

Additionally that day, Zelensky stated to reporters he would encourage Sir Keir to participate in the weapons procurement scheme, under which partner nations acquire weapons from the US to give to the Ukrainian forces.

While commending the United Kingdom's consistent assistance for the Ukrainian government, he remarked it should demonstrate clearly that it would participate in the initiative, as well as enforce additional measures on Moscow.
