RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "Including them were a great many UK service members deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
