Eurovision Used to Be a Lighthearted Spectacle – However It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A new initialism surfaced several months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, as stated by health professionals like child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for doctors to attend to a young patient who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been eradicated and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Supposed Ceasefire

Conditions in Gaza persist as hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations assert that genocidal acts are still being committed. Officials has denied these allegations, consistent with how it denies each claim it is implicated in. But while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, it seems, is what international harmony manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Forget the fact that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that global media are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Unimaginable Suffering

The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. An institution that was originally built on peace has now become a cynical way to whitewash war.
