For the Store Clerk That Left Me Absolutely Without Words – My Hat's Off to You
It was a day of rest, and I found myself sufficiently irritable, refueling my mum’s car. This was one of those petrol stations that operates as a supermarket, which often leads of waiting behind people bearing baskets of pricey provisions. This is a dreadful thing to occur when the sole aim is to get gasoline and leave. Dreadful.
Fourth in line I stood in the queue. There was only employee working, a young woman. Something stood out to her presence. When the faffer at the first position had at last settled for his purchases, his pastry, and his box of eggs, I was certain I heard the cashier bid him an excellent day. Odd. Maybe it was a mistake, or perhaps she spoke and meant it ironically. I wondered if she might actually be a supporter in my fight against faff, sharing my contempt for individuals slowing down people just getting gas including me.
Advancing next, now third in line. The person ahead of the queue finished pumping gas with notable efficiency. Again, the phrase came: “Have a wonderful day.” In fact, it was “have a wonderful day”. An American? At this location? Her tone suggested it, and hardly anyone here says to others such a cheerful phrase, or simply a good day. Quite out of place. It's uncommon to find many Americans visiting this town, certainly not working in petrol stations or anywhere else.
Second in line at last. Following a senior shopper embroiled in a lengthy struggle with her basket, her purchases, her wallet and her rewards card. This took an eternity. When she was done, she as well was wished to have a fantastic day. Clearly an American. I could have confirmed it by saying something hilarious in her direction, to observe that thing when they look at you, without a smile, and state very earnestly: “That is quite humorous.” But I couldn’t think of a funny comment to utter.
Ultimately, I accepted the heartfelt tone – or a performance of it, which amounts to identical in effect – while she stared directly into my eyes, deep into my soul, and wished me to have a great day. It improved my mood. A positive experience.
