Citizens have assembled throughout the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on 7 October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.

The incident saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the World War II.

Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a risk to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government postponed formal memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the loved ones of Israelis who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was broadcast throughout Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' delegations gathered in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of the Egyptian city for a second day of indirect talks to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A senior representative familiar with the discussions said that an late session of mediated discussions began at evening in Egypt.

The source explained the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that mediators are working hard to reduce the differences between the conflicting groups.

Key Matters in Talks

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The swap of the captives still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • Post-war management of the area

Public Sentiment

In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose family member survived the assault on the outdoor event, where hundreds were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas fighters - told: "No place seems like home now and until every captive return not a single person will have peace of mind."

"When we see everyone home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she concluded.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem, people congregated to express their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Demonstrator a participant stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."

Research now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israelis want the hostilities to finish in exchange for the freedom of the abducted.

Palestinian Conditions

At the location of the gathering, mourners assembled to remember the victims.

From there, the sound of aerial bombardments and explosions could be noticed just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli bombardment continued.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were noted in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and locality areas and in the east side area of that sector, as well the settlement to the north-west.

"As the evening comes, the fear appears with it," displaced Gaza City resident a mother, whose young son was died by an Israeli bombing earlier, shared.

"My family are afraid of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, clinging, notably my smallest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."

Medical Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had accepted the corpses of six people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli bombing in the southern district.

A different healthcare center in the south region of Khan Younis reported two more fatalities had been transported. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while attempting to get aid to the south region, medical staff stated.
