Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding The Game Awards was significant, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team is likely designing a real-time experience rather than another tactical title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
