Leeds Hold The Reds at Arm's Length to Earn Valuable Point at Anfield

Two undefeated records remained in place at Anfield, however only one side could take real satisfaction from the result. Daniel Farke's men carried out a textbook game plan of frustrating and containing Liverpool, with the maiden goalless draw of Arne Slot's tenure underscoring the lingering limitations within the reigning champions' latest upturn.

Defensive Masterclass Secures Crucial Point

A drab goalless stalemate, the initial in 84 matches for Slot's team, was largely due to the defensive dominance of the excellent centre-back pairing Struijk and Bijol, combined with the home side's failure to break down a well-drilled visitors' defence. Liverpool were limited to speculative opportunities, and a sprinkling of discontent could be heard around the stadium at the final signal on a sluggish display.

"Should I do not use the entire group and we have a schedule like this, I would never make changes," Daniel Farke explained. "For a player like Dominic I have to look after him. We all know his past couple of years was difficult. He is in incredible shape but it's important I look after him and sometimes the head needs to prevail over the emotion."

Liverpool's Frustration in Front of Goal

Liverpool initially showed more zip and sharpness than in recent outings, with Jeremie Frimpong influential on the flank. However, golden opportunities were few and far between. Their best openings in the first period involved forward Hugo Ekitiké.

  • After a smart one-two with Curtis Jones, the French forward drifted infield and drew a stop from keeper Lucas Perri at his front post.
  • The visitors' goalkeeper could not hold the shot, needing a crucial block from James Justin to prevent Florian Wirtz tapping in the loose ball.
  • Ekitiké later raced clear onto a long ball but was impeded by Jaka Bijol; despite not going down, his appeals for a spot-kick were waved away.

Spurned Opportunities Prove Pivotal

Ekitiké's afternoon worsened when he did not manage to find the net with his clearest opening. Meeting a swift Frimpong delivery in the six-yard box, the striker miscued a glance that hit the Perri while facing an open goal.

At the other end, their clearest sight of goal came from an Alisson error. The Brazilian shot-stopper sent a wayward pass directly to midfielder Ethan Ampadu, whose instant effort returned towards goal was saved by the alert goalkeeper.

Scrappy Final Stages

The match deteriorated into a bitty encounter, low on incident. Dominik Szoboszlai, returning from suspension, forced a save from Perri from distance. The subsequent rebound resulted in Ampadu handling the ball, awarding Liverpool a set-piece in a promising position, which Wirtz sent into the wall.

Slot introduced a triple substitution to inject urgency, and moments later Virgil van Dijk went agonisingly close to nodding his side in front from a set-piece, his effort flying just wide the post.

Late introduction Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had extended his goal streak for Leeds in the closing stages, but his finish was ruled out for a marginal offside call. In the end, the two teams had to settle for a share of the spoils.
