New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Furthermore, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he’s talking that way.”
New York police released security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims according to reports.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning near Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a newborn.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in 2019. He joined Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
