NY Launches Online Platform for Residents to Submit ICE Videos Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens
The state attorney general has rolled out a recent digital platform urging citizens to submit visual evidence of federal immigration enforcement throughout the state. This action follows a day after a high-profile enforcement action shook NYC's Chinatown, triggering mass demonstrations.
US Citizens Arrested During Enforcement Action
A lawmaker announced during a Wednesday press conference that four US citizens were detained and kept for "about 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations erupted in New York on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen deserves to exist without intimidation," the AG stated in a announcement.
"Anyone who observed and recorded ICE activity during the raid, I ask you to share that evidence with the authorities. We are dedicated to reviewing these accounts and determining any violations of law."
Portal Features
The portal offers options to upload visual evidence of the operation, plus a field to indicate where it occurred. Before submitting, submitters must tick a box that confirms that "the office might employ any materials, images, or footage in a legal proceeding, including in a legal proceeding or public report."
Details of the Chinatown Raid
The enforcement action, which observers say included over fifty government officers, happened in a popular district of Manhattan where counterfeit purses, items, goods and other goods are regularly available widely – frequently to visitors.
Videos of the operation show several covered and weaponized officers restraining and arresting a individual, and pushing back onlookers. Masses of New Yorkers pursued the officers along the roads. An military-style transport was observed traveling down the urban roads.
Leadership Statements
In a Wednesday press conference featuring the New York immigrant rights coalition, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, announced that four US citizens were taken by federal agents for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no situations where nationals should be detained for without cause." He noted the citizens were released on the following day with no accusations made.
"The goal is evident here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he remarked. "This constitutes a military-style operation to provoke unrest. It is purely a excuse to generate turmoil for this administration to bring in the armed forces to prevent conflict that they have created."
Extensive Outcry
Outrage over the ICE raid rapidly grew – each of the mayoral candidates condemned the incident, including the state leader.
"Yet again, the current administration selects heavy-handed tactics that create fear, instead of protection. It must stop," one mayoral candidate declared.
New York City immigrant rights groups expressed outrage also.
"Immigration agents targeted the neighborhood with tactical trucks, hooded officers and protective equipment to focus on street vendors attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to public safety and focused completely on terrorizing immigrant families and areas," stated the leader of a rights organization.
ICE Policies
Agency rules forbids the arrest of American nationals and the organization has claimed it will not arrest or detain US citizens. Yet, independent reporting has discovered that more than 170 US citizens have been held against their will by immigration authorities during the period of the present government.
Recent Pattern
ICE raids have been cropping up increasingly in NY and nationwide lately.
A recent action in the city center was the initial documented operation on an immigrant shelter of the existing leadership. Demonstrations opposing federal operations are ubiquitous as are accusations of violence and cruel conditions.
Most recently, a document submitted by legal entities claimed inadequate care of expectant mothers in government custody.
