Outrage Erupts as Trump's Comments on Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Rebuke
Figures from both sides of the political spectrum and the entertainment world are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the tragic deaths of esteemed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Controversial Social Media Post
After the couple were found dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police Update and Arrest
Authorities have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. It is reported his bail was set at a substantial sum.
A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
This is a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the remarks. She referenced prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just lost it. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Rebuke from His Own Party
Some Republican elected officials also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and mental health some families face.
Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his political party to justify the statements.
Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the shooting of another individual.
A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
