Shock as Beloved South African DJ Killed in Johannesburg.
A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a nation grappling with entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was approached by three individuals, one of whom opened fire on him before escaping on foot.
The motive of the shooting is unknown and no arrests are in custody, police said.
The Fatal Incident
Law enforcement indicated that Stock was targeted as he was departing from a building near the Carlton Centre.
He had devoted time at the site overseeing the setup of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, according to reports.
"It is alleged the deceased was approached by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before fleeing the scene on foot," authorities confirmed.
Surveillance tape reportedly captured a man with dreadlocked hair and clad in what appeared to be a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before running away.
The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but collapsed across the street.
Police added that Stock had an unused firearm and it was not a robbery during the attack.
Important clues, like cartridges, were found at the scene.
Call for Public Assistance
Authorities have requested members of the public who may have have information to assist with the investigation.
"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the shooting, and police have been tracking them to determine their destination," added an official.
Family and Public Reaction
His sister, a close relative, said the relatives are devastated to process his death.
"I am devastated. I am shattered," she said.
"Everyone understood he was a voice for many people. He was a fearless commentator about subjects not many people were ready to speak about. This is a devastating blow."
She urged the citizens to not sharing explicit content from the scene, noting this was an extremely painful time, particularly for Stock's three sons.
A Multifaceted Career
Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a South African broadcasting platform.
Apart from his media career, Stock was active in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including security provision, providing elite guarding services and managing safety for prestigious gatherings across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in property management and was involved in property reclaimations.
Official and Public Tributes
His killing has shocked the country and led to an outpouring of tributes from his audience, the government and political parties.
A government minister remarked he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's killing.
"He was forthright boldly and honestly. He even challenged me and my policies as a minister. He was a pure example of who we ought to be," he stated.
A public representative commented the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a trauma for all South Africans".
A broadcasting director said that "DJ Warras was not merely a TV personality. He was a talented storyteller, a passionate music lover and a kind-hearted individual who brought joy and energy to every performance. His artistic passion left an lasting impression."
In a statement, the channel he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his charisma, kindness and intelligent commentary, adding that his legacy "will be remembered".
