Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
