The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he began working on pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as a number of outfits for her US tour after becoming Duchess.
After a career spanning over fifty years, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
