The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
