Our team is checking images and video circulated earlier today that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed to his wounds. A probe is under way.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
