Who's Leading in the Pursuit for the European Golden Shoe?
The competition for the prestigious Golden Shoe is intensifying as the 2025-26 season approaches its midway point.
With a different winner in each of the previous three campaigns, the award remains up for grabs. Manchester City star Erling Haaland was the last Premier League-based striker to secure the trophy back in 2022-23.
The prolific Norwegian striker is back in the mix this campaign, but encounters formidable competition from Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane and Real Madrid phenomenon Kylian Mbappe. With many fixtures remaining, other talents still have time to enter the fray.
Understanding the European Golden Shoe Award?
The Golden Boot award was inaugurated in the 1967-68 by the French publication L'Equipe to recognize the highest goalscorer in domestic league matches from a European top-flight league.
Since the 1997-98 season, the prize has been overseen by European Sports Media, which introduced a weighted scoring system. Under this method, a player's tallies are multiplied by a specific coefficient based on the strength ranking of their league.
Goals scored in Europe's top five leagues—the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, German Bundesliga, Serie A, and Ligue 1—are worth two points each.
For competitions ranked from sixth to twenty-second in UEFA's list, such as the Portuguese Primeira Liga, goals are worth 1.5 points. Goals in lower-ranked European leagues are worth one point.
While the award has been jointly won on several instances in the past, a regulation update from the 2019-20 season states that in the case of a tie, the trophy goes to the player with the fewest minutes played.
If the tie remains, the next tiebreaker is the number of league assists, followed by the fewest penalties scored. Only after these tiebreakers are used would the prize be shared.
Who are the Leading Contenders?
Currently, a three-horse tussle is underway for the 2025-26 Golden Shoe, with the trio of most recent winners split by just a single goal.
- Harry Kane (English captain) leads with 19 goals (38 points) from 15 Bundesliga games.
- Erling Haaland also has 19 goals (38 points) from 17 Premier League appearances.
- Kylian Mbappe sits one back on 18 goals (36 points) in 18 La Liga matches.
In fourth place is RFS striker Darko Lemajic of Latvian club RFS, who has scored 28 goals (28 points) across the club's 36 league games in 2025.
Dutch side Feyenoord forward Ayase Ueda is tied for fifth with 18 goals (27 points) from 17 Eredivisie matches this term.
The remainder of the top 10 is comprised of players from leagues that function on a January-to-December schedule.
